Chemical, pharmaceutical and food products rely on the cylindrical stainless steel filter.

Have you ever wondered why most of the industrial filtration systems have a polygonal design?

The answer is quite simple. It is the most modular solution based on the gas volume to be treated; being also the simplest and cheapest. The polluting flue gases, after passing through the pre-filtration chamber, are conveyed inside the structure where they are forced through the filtering units, either bags or cartridges, which hold the polluting substances and let the cleaned air to flow towards the outlet of the filter.

Thanks to gravity, the captured impurities fall into the hopper and then into either small or big collecting containers. In this type of systems, the filtered pollutants are always sent to disposal, so the accumulation process does not require any special attention other than that of efficiency and safety.

However, there are filtration processes that, in addition to safeguarding the healthiness of the workplace and of the atmosphere, also have the purpose of recovering the filtered dust to facilitate its reuse in the production cycle. We are talking about applications in specific sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals and food processing. In these processes the maximum recovery of the dust must be guaranteed, but at the same time also the maintenance of sanitary conditions must be guaranteed, eliminating in any case the risk of contamination. This category of filters is recognized by shape, construction material and filtration dynamics. Therefore, the design choice is oriented towards the cylindrical shape with a structure made of stainless steel (Inox).

This design offers undeniable advantages. First, these filters are often subject to higher than usual working pressures: the cylindrical shape offers greater structural resistance. The second great advantage is directly related to the resistance of steel to oxidation. Whether it is a food, chemical or pharmaceutical dust, the internal walls of the filter offer a clean and contaminant-free environment, as well as greater resistance to chemical and mechanical attack which is typical of stainless steel. Thus, the dust can then be reinserted into the production cycle without any further treatment. The third and final advantage is the shape of the internal walls which, being circular in section, do not create obstacles (right angles) to the fall by gravity, avoiding accumulations that would reduce the collection efficiency and could create contamination due to the perishable nature of the accumulated dust.

The cylindrical stainless-steel filters are divided into two large families, the PULCO AIR bag filters and the KOMPAC AIR cartridge filters. The choice between the two solutions depends on the conditions of the treated dust. Dry dusts, dusts with a thickening tendency, amplitude of loading volumes, particle sizes are just some of the factors that must be taken into consideration when evaluating one of the two solutions.
